Success In The Making
Brittany Harris, 17, is a senior honors student at Saint Mary's College High School in Berkeley, California where she has maintained a 3.8 GPA while participating in various extracurricular activities. She is a member of the Imani Voices of Faith Choir, the Oakland Interfaith Youth Gospel Choir, and a former member of the Oakland Youth Chorus. Brittany is also active with the choral and drama departments at her school and often performs in her school musicals. Brittany has been recognized by Who’s Who Among American High School Students, the National Honor Roll, and was recently named a National Achievement Scholar. Despite her busy schedule she still manages to serve as the youth computer instructor at the East Oakland Youth Development Center.
Brittany began as a volunteer at EOYDC in 2001. After volunteering in the front office, the homework center, and as a youth leader at EOYDC’s Summer Cultural Enrichment Program, Brittany realized that she had a responsibility to work further with the youth at EOYDC and in September of 2003, she began to teach the youth computer class. “My mom enrolled me in computer classes at age 4,” Brittany says, “and I have been reaping the benefits ever since.” She recognizes the values of understanding the computer and enjoys working with children, which is why Brittany finds her work at EOYDC so rewarding. “It is only my hope that my work will make a difference in the life of at least one child at EOYDC.”
In college, Brittany plans to major in mathematics and upon completion, hopes to become a mathematician or an actuary. She eventually hopes to receive an M.B.A. in hopes of owning her own actuarial science company. Regardless of her final career plans, she knows that her love of math and computers will be key in choosing a career path.
