Working at the East Oakland Youth Development Center for the past three years has taught me many things, responsibility being the most important one.

I first my first job at the Center was in its Summer Cultural Enrichment Program in 2003. It was here that I was able to begin understanding what it meant to hold a job and all that comes with it. I was recognized as being a strong leader, and since then I have tried to work hard to remain worthy of this recognition. My work has allowed me to gain many relationships that are very important to me. I have gotten the opportunity to meet many executives in the world of business, as well as travel and accomplish things that I would have never thought of, backpacking on an eight day adventure being the most strenuous.

My current assignment as a tutor in the Homework Center is most important to me because of all the children that I meet on a day to day basis. They have inspired me to pursue a career as an elementary school teacher, and work hard in teaching the fundamentals of life. I believe that without a mentor to guide you through your struggles, you will be unable to succeed, and so I plan to make sure that I can become a positive role model in a little child’s life.

Overall, working at EOYDC has helped me to become more independent; I no longer look to my parent for my needs and wants, instead I strive to get the things I cherish on my own. I am unsure if I could ever run a Center like this one, but I am positive that I can become an important part of one. My next goal is to become an Assistant Director in the Summer Cultural Enrichment Program. I hope to work hard and do all I can to succeed in this position.
