I have been working at The E.O.Y.D.C for four years. During this time I have learned a lot about responsibility, commitments, being mature, being a leader, and friendship. I have had the chance to demonstrate the skills I already had, while developing new skills.

When I first came to The E.O.Y.D.C I did not know a lot of English, but after interacting with the children and working with my peers, I was able to improve my English skills. Working with children has not only allowed me to improve my English skills, but also helped me to become a better person. Watching them as they grow up and seeing them reach their goals is incredible and it’s even more incredible to know that I helped in some way.

For two of the years that I have been a part of the E.O.Y.D.C staff, I have worked as a youth leader. I was not only a part of the staff, but I was also a big sister, cousin and best friend to the children and my fellow coworkers. I have many fun and amazing memories. We went on field trips, picnics, to the movies, shopping and we even had a sleepover and our own E.O.Y.D.C carnival. Doing these things made my job a lot easier and interesting. I have also had the honor of being awarded the Administration Award two years in a row.

Since I have been working at the E.O.Y.D.C, I have not only worked as a youth leader, but also as a part time receptionist and a tutor in the Homework Center. Working as a receptionist helped me to become more professional. I had to dress more appropriately, in addition to learning how to answer the phones, (multiple phone calls), take messages, run errands and use the fax machine and the copier. Even though being a receptionist was hard work, I liked the position because I was able to understand more about how the Center operates.

Whether I’m working as a tutor, youth leader or receptionist I am always learning. I am constantly learning how to stand up for myself and be a leader, so when kids look up to me I am able to be a good role model. When they ask me how I go to school and work I tell them that as they get older, they will have a lot of things going on at the same time, especially as they get closer to college, and they will have to make adjustments, but they can do it. Working at The Center has given me a lot of confidence and helped me to mature and I try to pass that on to the children.

The E.O.Y.D.C is a great place to learn and grow and I am so happy that I’m able to be a part of such a great place.
