THE ASOMUGHA COLLEGE TOUR (ACT)

“Nnamdi opened my eyes. If it wasn’t for him, I never would have
had the chance to go to Boston and look at schools.”
Adarious Payton, ACT Class of 2007

Building on his belief in the importance of higher education and his strong commitment to giving back to those in need, Oakland Raiders Cornerback launched The Asomugha College Tour (ACT) in April 2007. ACT, an annual high school college tour and mentoring program, is dedicated to providing young people from disadvantaged neighborhoods in the Bay Area with the opportunity to visit college campuses around the country.

Each year, Nnamdi teams up with the East Oakland Youth Development Center, where he’s also a mentor, to identify outstanding and talented honor students to join him on the experience of a lifetime. ACT has given 20 students the chance to visit some of the country’s most renowned colleges and universities (as of 12/31/2009).

During the inaugural tour of 2007, Nnamdi brought four students to Atlanta, GA to visit Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Spelman College and Georgia Tech University. In 2008, Nnamdi and six students visited Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston University, Brown University and Berklee College of Music. All of the tour participants have gone on to attend institutions of higher education.

In April of 2009, ACT brought 10 outstanding students from Berkeley’s Young Musicians Program and East Oakland Youth Development Center to New York City to visit Columbia University, The Juilliard School and New York University and the New School.

ACT is more than just a college tour. It’s a growing community of young people who are inspired by a role model who believes that education, exposure and hard work is the start to a brighter future.
