EOYDC in collaboration with Shamwari Gallery and City of Oakland Crafts & Cultural Arts Department sponsored a series of Stone Carving Workshops at EOYDC. This project was designed to give  participants’ knowledge of art. Sculpture is one of the oldest known art forms and has a storied history in Sub-Sahara Africa.

Participants get an introduction to sculpture, a history lesson and an education on the art of other cultures. They learned the importance of art, how art can develop self-respect, self-worth and self-sufficiency.  The workshops were conducted by Master Zimbabwean sculptor, Witness Bonjizi.

Participants were given the tools and stones to begin work. Each student chose the stone they wanted to work with. Mr. Bonjizi discussed with each student to get what he or she wanted out of the stone. We will be working on another workshop for the next year!
